Nacogdoches Medical Center launches specialized spine care institute

Jan 11, 2023
(Nacogdoches, TX) – Nacogdoches and surrounding communities have access to the latest technologies and techniques available to address back and neck pain at the Nacogdoches Institute of Spine Care (NISC) at Nacogdoches Medical Center (NMC). Launched this month, NISC is a resource for people suffering from back pain, neck pain, chronic spine conditions and back injuries and offers spine care services including diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Neurosurgeon doctor Mike Randle, M.D., chief of surgery at Nacogdoches Medical Center says NISC offers holistic care that doesn’t necessarily involve surgery. “We start our treatment plans with non-surgical spine pain management treatments, such as heat and cold therapy, massage, physical therapy, or anti-inflammatory drugs. If your pain does not get better using non-invasive methods, a neuro-spine surgeon may use minimally invasive or other surgical techniques to address your pain. Minimally invasive surgery can mean faster recovery and fewer complications.”

Back pain is the second most common reason for seeing a doctor, yet many people endure the suffering longer than necessary before seeing a back pain specialist. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 39 percent of adults have back pain in the United States. Some 16 million adults experience chronic back pain that limits their everyday activities. Back pain is the sixth most costly condition in the United States and a leading cause of work-loss and work limitations.

Nacogdoches native, Ed Pool, was experiencing debilitating back pain until the spine care team at NMC was able to help him. Now, thanks to the compassionate care he received, he is completely pain free and back to enjoying his life again. “I can’t say enough how much I appreciate the care I received at NMC,” says Pool. “The people are wonderful, the team took great care of me and most importantly, I am pain-free.”

The spine specialists at NISC can help with these conditions and more:

  • Back or spine fractures
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated disc
  • Kyphosis
  • Radiculopathy
  • Scoliosis
  • Spine cancer
  • Spondylolisthesis

If a provider determines surgery is the best course of action, NISC’s specially trained neurosurgeons are ready to provide the best surgical options based on the patient’s specific condition. Various surgical techniques include:

  • Artificial disk replacement
  • Discectomy
  • Foraminotomy
  • Nucleoplasty
  • Spinal decompression
  • Spinal fusion
  • Spinal laminectomy
  • Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty
  • Minimally invasive spine surgery
